Since deficiency of estrogen causes symptoms and physiological changes during perimenopause and menopause, estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progesterone (HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy) is widely used as the choice of treatment. HRT helps in the prevention of osteoporosis, hot flashes, coronary artery disease, genital atrophy etc. However, a large number of women are either not benefited by this therapy or not recommended HRT (estrogen) due to its side effects. Those who have a positive family history of malignancies, breast cancer, unexplained uterine bleeding, thrombophlebitis, active liver disease etc are also advised against HRT due to increased risk of developing those ailments. |
