This condition progresses through three stages as described below:
Prodrome
Initially the person experiences a tingling, itching or knife- like pain in the involved dermatome or area of skin covered by the affected nerve.
Acute Phase
It is characterized by fatigue, malaise, low-grade fever and dermatomal (skin) rash. The rash appears as vesicles followed by pustules and crust formation; which eventually heal within 14-21 days.
Chronic Phase
Post-herpetic neuralgia is the presenting symptom. You will experience a burning pain along the affected dermatome (area of skin covered by the affected nerve) after the rash subsides. Usually the pain resolves in 2-3 weeks. However, innumerable individuals experience this pain for months to years. |
