Double-Blind, Placebo Trials are a convenient way of determining whether a drug is effective in treating a specific ailment. You may have read regarding such numerous assessments based on which researchers and skeptics state whether Homeopathy is a fake or is it for real!

What are these trials?
These trials are performed using one single remedy, over a period of time, on a group of individuals with the same or similar ailment. The changes noted in their condition (whether positive, negative or nil) are recorded and the effectiveness of the remedy is ascertained.

E.g. we all know of a Homeopathic remedy called ‘Arnica’ which can be very useful for relieving muscular pains. If this remedy is used in such a study, its effects on relieving such pains are noted.

However, homeopathic treatment protocol varies significantly and numerous remedies may be applied during the management of a disease or condition.

How does a homeopath actually manage a health condition and why is a double-blind trial not a convincing or practical method of knowing the effectiveness of Homeopathy?
Firstly, it is isn’t true that only one remedy is prescribed for a condition and even if done so it isn’t necessary that the physician may continue that remedy indefinitely.

E.g. when a child is brought in for a condition like asthma the following possibilities during Homeopathic treatment may arise:

The initial remedy chosen may be prescribed for immediate relief of his/her breathlessness. A remedy such as this is known as an ‘acute or specific remedy’ and may have an immediate, temporary effect. This is commonly practiced as the possibility of the condition worsening does exist and only a ‘short acting’ or a remedy capable of working immediately will work.

If a remedy fails to act as expected, the physician may change the remedy if desired and if found appropriate. It occasionally does take time for a Homeopath to understand or extract all the necessary details required for an ideal prescription.

Once this immediate relief is offered the physician may then decide to prescribe a longer acting or constitutional remedy which has the potential to lower the intensity and frequency of the problem as well as prevent relapses. For a remedy such as this to evolve a thorough case analysis and a detail case history is necessary. A ‘Case-Analysis Questionnaire’ is therefore sent out to our patients before commencing the treatment.

Change of remedies: A Homeopath could change your prescription as early as 15-20 days, either by changing the remedy or increasing the power of the dose. Very often a person’s symptom may change in the first 3-4 weeks, asking for a change in prescription. As a result we generally provide 2-3 remedies in addition to the initial prescription. This gives us the freedom to alter the dose as and when needed.

The only way the true essence of Homeopathy and its beneficial results can be understood is by:
Experiencing homeopathy for yourself, either for a short-term or for a longstanding ailment
Evaluating cases treated at a Homeopaths centre and interviewing patients being treated

A double-blind trial may give inconsistent results as:

The condition though in definition may be the same among participants, the intensity and fundamentals may vary

The severity, nature and stage of disease may be different

The person’s susceptibility and response to a particular medicinal strength (potency) may be different and in our opinion is the most relevant cause
